The minor "a" stands for Asynchronous, meaning your upstream bandwidth is not set to match your downstream bandwidth speeds. sDSL (synchronous) does rarely exist, but is usually marketed as "Business Class" service, and therefore more expensive, and the download speed is typically sacrificed to match the upload speed. If you were hosting your own web-servers, you'd probably want to inquire about sDSL, at least until you got serious enough to warrant the big pipes. Most of the sDSL lines I've seen are clocked at 1.0-1.5 Mbps, similar to a T1, and of course they come with one or more static IP addresses so you can host.

Also, if you look at the fine print in the advertising materials, note that AT&T offers speeds "up to" the 3-6 Mbps, but only guarantees something like 256 Kbps. Gotcha! They can't guarantee the speed you will actually get because it is dependent on the distance of the copper run from your demarc to the CO substation switch. Okay, the condition of the line will affect it too, but that is rarely the case, even on copper from "19fucking55". DSL and even T1 service need only 2 copper wires to deliver the goods.

You can try to get better, but I can almost promise you're not gonna. I managed to get a guy with a big-dollar Fluke netalyzer that looked like it could launch a shuttle to test my line, but I got only marginally better service after they switched me to a new pair (I have a six pair cable run to my house from the pedestal - and at least one has already been fried by lightning.) Just be glad you're not served by a little jerkkwater mom & pop ISP that has the whole county blocked from competition.

I read once where a guy in a similar situation purchased a T3, got an FCC license and resold WiFi access to his subdivision neighbors to go into competition with his jerkwater ISP. If only I had more neighbors and fewer trees, I'd... Oh wait. Fuck that - I'll buy my porn from a magazine rack before I have neighbors on my ass again!

Comment on Scroll down for awesome wildlife photo

Geez!!!!!

Tits to die for,

Legs to cry for,

Face to lie for,

Quick, bring me my defibrillator.

I'd ride that filly....bare-fucking-back till my aeorta explodes!!

Comment on So let's do a quick check

On the nose Dick. Over the years it might have gained some resistance. For mine I need to reset the DSL modem anytime we have a large rain storm. Phone works so they do not want to run another line.

DSL has to do with frequency you can run on a wire. One phone line can be cut up into 24 64k blocks (that would be a T1 for old geeks) and the phone uses the first 64k. The rest is split between send and receive. Peak speed is usually on down loads and you can do some frequency doubling on really good lines. DSL is the superior topology as it is a star configuration rather than the base band cable is.

I've been doing networks for a little more than 25 years now.

Comment on Okay, I need your geek brains

Exactly. And even if you have Dial-up, or DSL, which are basically lines directly from your house to the ISP source, you're still sharing resources with everyone else at the local ISP.

Dick, if you're running windows, right click the network icon (bottom left of your screen) and select diagnose and repair. click that. if it asks you if you want to reset the local area connection, or get a new IP, go ahead and do that.

sometimes that's enough to get your connection running better. drop me an email if you have any other questions, I've got a degree in networking and might be able to save you a call to one of those indo-chinese "help" phone banks .

Comment on Okay, I need your geek brains

Also, during high usage times (like right after school lets out, for example) you will see some slowing down, it's a "network" of sorts after all. Though things are better then they used to be.

Anyhow, Philo is pretty much on the money. If you are getting the numbers you say you are, you are probably not too far from about the best you will get despite what the advertisements claim.

Comment on So let's do a quick check

"First reader who buys one these rolling pieces of Government subsidized dogshit and fesses up to it is banned for life, plus two weeks."

I'd throw in an asswhipping, just to make sure.

</rdf:RDF>
